Clinical Coding Specialist

The role and Responsibilities/Tasks of Clinical Coding Specialists include:

  • Need trained Clinical coders to enter patient information into classification systems software who can assign specific codes to diagnoses and procedures in the patient’s records based on various coding systems which may differ depending on the facility
  • May need to establish and maintain a link with Coding Team, Clinical Records staff, and Medical Records staff
  • Ensure compliance with standards, proceduresand protocols
  • Identify improvement opportunities and implement those as required
  • May need to maintain good communication with internal/external clinical coding auditors

  • Regular evaluation of procedures used

  • Clinical Coding Specialist in 2012 earn on an average between approximately $40,000 - $54,000 depending on organization size or type, area, expertise, industry and so on (figures taken from industry sources)
Certification Needed

Clinical Coding Specialist needs to possess an associate degree as well as additional certification.

Certifications that these coders need generally include-
  • The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) certification for Registered Health Information Technicians (RHIT), which requires a two-year associate degree and passing a written exam.
  • The American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), the Board of Medical Specialty Coding and Professional Association of Health Care Coding Specialists - different credentialing in coding and specialized coding
  • Successful completion of ICD_10 (minimum version 2) Introductory qualification
  • Completion of the intermediate coding course is beneficial to the specialist
Other skills required include-
  • Completed coursework in anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology, or has depicted proficiency in these areas in earlier assignments
  • Specialization in clinical classification, health care reimbursement methods, and database management
  • Computer literacy and Proficient in medical coding systems in order to enter patient records into computer software.
  • Knowledge of Health care environment and commitment to accuracy
  • Knowledge of Quality Assurance and accreditation principles
Work Environment and Outlook
  • Work schedules differ depending on the type of facility – May work regular 40-hour work week, or even include evenings and nights if the facility is open 24 hours per day
  • According to BLS employment opportunities for coders are expected to grow by 20 percent, much faster than average, between 2008 and 2018
  • Coders with strong computer and technology skills will be most qualified for these positions, due to increasing use of electronic health records
