HIMS Coder Educator

The role and Responsibilities/Tasks of HIMS Coder Educator include:

  • Developing educational and training materials, along with conducting and coordinating training and development of Health Information Management staff
  • Training technical staff regarding usage of information systems components of the medical records database system
  • Preparing and retaining all department training materials, tools and/or records
  • Providing on-going education and annual regulatory updates
  • Reviews and identifies skills, competencies and areas of learning and training needed for new hires, staff and department management
  • Plans and coordinates the orientation programs for new hires
  • Develops and maintains an education calendar
  • Develops and conducts programs that are task/function specific
  • Acts as a knowledge resource for all staff providing onsite support of trainees. Deals with issues involving HIMS electronic applications
  • Works in regional/system-wide teams to develop Health Information Management Systems
  • Perform ongoing research to ensure compliance with clinical documentation and/or regulatory guidelines and standards.
Salary Range
  • HIMS Coder Educator in 2012 on an average earn between approximately $50,000 - $67,000 per annum depending on organization size or type, area, expertise, industry and so on (figures taken from industry sources)
Certification Needed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • HIMS Coder Educator must possess a current knowledge of business and/or healthcare as normally obtained through the completion of a bachelor’s degree in business administration, healthcare administration or related field
  • Posses advanced training in Health Information Management requirements and systems and in adult learning principles
  • Must be well versed in regulatory requirements for medical record documentation, as well as Medical Staff Rules and Regulations where applicable
  • Medical terminology and an understanding of the laws and regulations associated with medical records functions

Additional certifications generally include-

  • Acute care coding environment, requires a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) in an active status with the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)
  • Ambulatory coding environment, requires Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification, with RHIA, RHIT or CCS certification preferred
Other skills required include-
  • Must have education and training skills and effective team work skills
  • Must possess excellent written, verbal, and customer service skills, to conduct educational needs analysis and to teach effectively
  • Proficiency in the use of common office and presentation software
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with computer healthcare applications
  • Knowledge of Health care environment and commitment to accuracy
  • Knowledge of Quality Assurance and accreditation principles
