{"id":11531,"date":"2020-07-20T15:13:49","date_gmt":"2020-07-20T09:43:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.medicalbillersandcoders.com\/blog\/?p=11531"},"modified":"2020-07-20T21:20:12","modified_gmt":"2020-07-20T15:50:12","slug":"medicare-provider-enrollment-flexibilities-during-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.medicalbillersandcoders.com\/blog\/medicare-provider-enrollment-flexibilities-during-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Medicare Provider Enrollment Flexibilities during COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">CMS is using its authority under section 1135 of the Social Security Act to offer flexibility with Medicare provider enrollment to support the COVID-19 pandemic national emergency.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During the PHE, CMS is allowing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalbillersandcoders.com\/physician-group.aspx\">physicians<\/a> and non-physician practitioners to temporarily enroll as Medicare providers using a toll-free hotline provided by their MAC. The numbers are listed at the end of this article.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Physicians and Non-Physician Practitioners Eligible to Enroll in Medicare<\/h3>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Establish toll-free hotlines to enroll and receive temporary Medicare billing privileges\n<ul>\n<li>Waive the following screening requirements:<\/li>\n<li>Criminal background checks associated with fingerprint-based criminal background checks (FCBC) &#8211; 42 C.F.R 424.518 (to the extent applicable)<\/li>\n<li>Site visits &#8211; 42 C.F.R 424.517<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Postpone all revalidation actions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">All Other Providers and Suppliers (including DMEPOS) Eligible to Enroll in Medicare<\/h3>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Expedite any pending or new applications\n<ul>\n<li>All clean web applications will be processed within 7 business days and all clean paper applications in 14 business days<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Waive the following screening requirements for all enrollment applications received on or after March 1, 2020:\n<ul>\n<li>Application Fee \u2013 42 C.F.R. 424.514<\/li>\n<li>Criminal background checks associated with fingerprint-based criminal background checks (FCBC) \u2013 42 C.F.R. 424.518 (to the extent applicable)<\/li>\n<li>Site-visits \u2013 42 C.F.R. 424.517<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Postpone all revalidation actions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>What information you should have available to enroll as a physician or non-physician practitioner?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To avail this temporary billing privileges, you will be asked to share limited information about your practice.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Legal Name<\/li>\n<li>Contact information<\/li>\n<li>Address information<\/li>\n<li>National Provider Identifier (NPI)<\/li>\n<li>Social Security Number<\/li>\n<li>A valid in-state or out-of-state license<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">State Licensure for Medicare Providers<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">CMS will also provide individual waivers from the Medicare requirement that a physician or non-physician practitioner must be licensed in the State in which they are practicing. Four criteria must be met for the waiver:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>The physician or non-physician practitioner must be enrolled as such in the Medicare program,<\/li>\n<li>The physician or non-physician practitioner must possess a valid license to practice in the State which relates to his or her Medicare enrollment,<\/li>\n<li>The physician or non-physician practitioner is furnishing services \u2013 whether in person or via telehealth \u2013 in a State in which the emergency is occurring in order to contribute to relief efforts in his or her professional capacity, and<\/li>\n<li>The physician or non-physician practitioner is not affirmatively excluded from practice in the State or any other State that is part of the 1135 emergency area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Revalidation Activities are on Hold<\/h3>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>CMS is temporarily ceasing revalidation efforts for all Medicare providers or suppliers. Upon the lifting of the public health emergency, CMS will resume revalidation activities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">CMS published Provider Enrollment Relief <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/files\/document\/provider-enrollment-relief-faqs-covid-19.pdf\">FAQs<\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Medicare Provider Enrollment Hotline numbers and hours of operation<\/h3>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">How to use Medicare Enrollment Hotline?<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">CMS has established toll-free number hotlines at each of the Medicare Administrative Contractors to enable physicians, non-physician practitioners, and Part A certified providers and suppliers establishing isolation facilities to start temporary Medicare billing privileges.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If due to this pandemic change in practice location then physicians and non-physician practitioners can also contact the hotline to update their location. Physicians and non-physician practitioners can use this hotline to ask questions regarding the other provider enrollment flexibilities afforded by the 1135 waiver.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Providers and suppliers should only contact the hotline for the MAC that services their geographic area.
