The increased number of multiple, implemented IT systems since the early nineties has created an urgent requirement for interoperability in healthcare to help manage the increasing needs of patients.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ai-optimize-7\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Below are some key drivers for healthcare providers to share data:<\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li class=\"ai-optimize-8\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Improving the speed and quality of care delivery<\/li>\n<li class=\"ai-optimize-9\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Quick access to patient information<\/li>\n<li class=\"ai-optimize-10\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Medical terms standardized<\/li>\n<li class=\"ai-optimize-11\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Utilizing IT systems, Paper saving and increase in efficiency<\/li>\n<li class=\"ai-optimize-12\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Increased the use of IT systems for users<\/li>\n<li class=\"ai-optimize-13\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Multiple care providers can share patient information<\/li>\n<li class=\"ai-optimize-14\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Medical errors reduced<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-15\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hospitals started to communicate with one another to exchange patient records. Then by the mid-eighties, hospitals required to exchange information with autonomous organizations, such as reference labs or clinics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-16\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">From working with <a href=\"https:\/\/carequality.org\/\">Carequality<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ehealthexchange.org\/\">eHealth Exchange<\/a>, to establish the nationwide network such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonwellalliance.org\/\">CommonWell<\/a>, or utilizing HL7 to define standards, it\u2019s all been on the vendor\u2019s path to improve connections and capabilities across various stakeholders.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"ai-optimize-17\" style=\"text-align: left;\">THE STORY OF INTEROPERABILITY through HL7: Messaging Standards (Source: HL7 Messaging)<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11961\" src=\"https:\/\/www.medicalbillersandcoders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/blog.png\" alt=\"THE STORY OF INTEROPERABILITY through HL7\" width=\"1007\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.medicalbillersandcoders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/blog.png 1007w, https:\/\/www.medicalbillersandcoders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/blog-300x82.png 300w, https:\/\/www.medicalbillersandcoders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/blog-768x210.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1007px) 100vw, 1007px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-18\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to Evanocom, by the early 2000s, outside of hospital care, the demand increased for data to help clinical and medical workflows. The HL7 V2 data model was becoming overextended and there was a lack of proper methodologies to model elements and messages. In response, the richer and complex messaging standard of HL7 V3 was introduced based on XML coding \u2013 it took around 10 years from development to standard publication.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-19\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The long adoption cycle, large resource requirement, and non-compatibility of HL7 V2 meant HL7 V3, was not hugely popular and uptake was strongest in health systems such as Canada and the Netherlands where national mandated health IT programmes were in place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-20\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2005 the Clinical Document Architecture (CDA), an XML-based mark-up standard intended to support the exchange of clinical documents, was released. It was widely viewed as a simpler version of HL7 v3 and was a success in the United States but the standard was implemented in different and often incompatible ways. By now, the international standards community decided that something simpler was needed.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"ai-optimize-21\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Benefits of Advanced Technology<\/h3>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-22\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The advance of technology has enabled Hans Buitendijk, director of the interoperability strategy at Cerner, and his team to do things they couldn\u2019t have done before, or at least it would\u2019ve been really hard. But now technology allows interoperability to become more available.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"ai-optimize-23\" style=\"text-align: left;\">What\u2019s New About the Definition of Interoperability?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-24\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Currently, HIMSS classifies interoperability as having three components: foundational, structural, and semantic. Now, the group is proposing a fourth type: organizational interoperability. The goal, according to Mari Greenberger, Senior Director of Informatics at HIMSS, is to consider a global perspective of interoperability so that information can be shared seamlessly across borders and jurisdictions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-25\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to Mari Greenberger, \u201cThis definition is an aspirational one. It\u2019s what HIMSS is trying to accomplish and work toward when it comes to achieving global interoperability.
